Tax and broker assumptions
The parameters behind every “after tax” figure and every broker filter on this site — published so you can check them.
These are estimates from published rules, not tax advice. Your broker’s withholding, your forms (W-8BEN, non-resident declarations) and your personal situation decide what you actually pay; ask a tax adviser.
Tax profiles
Cyprus resident, non-domiciled
Cyprus tax resident who is not domiciled in Cyprus: no Special Defence Contribution on dividends and interest, GeSY 2.65 %, foreign withholding is final.
Cyprus resident, domiciled
Cyprus tax resident and domiciled (for example after 17 of the last 20 years of residence): SDC 5 % on dividends and 17 % on interest, reduced by the foreign tax already paid; GeSY 2.65 %.
Gross only (no tax estimate)
No estimate: pages show yields before tax only. Choose it if neither Cyprus profile describes you; other countries are not modelled yet.
Formula: net = gross − withholding at source − max(0, SDC − foreign tax credit) − GeSY (2.65 % up to the annual cap).
Rates per 100 of distributions
Computed by the same function the pages use, from the tax table of our research (W5 §10.6).
| Source of the distribution | Withheld at source | SDC, CY non-dom | You keep, CY non-dom | SDC, CY domiciled | You keep, CY domiciled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| US company, REIT, BDC or fund (ordinary dividend) (W5 #1) | 15,00% | 0,00% | 82,35% | 0,00% | 82,35% |
| US fund: interest-related or short-term-gain dividend, exemption applied (W5 #2) | 0,00% | 0,00% | 97,35% | 5,00% | 92,35% |
| Russian company via a Russian broker (today) (W5 #8) | 15,00% | 0,00% | 82,35% | 0,00% | 82,35% |
| Russian company, from 2027 if bill 617-9 is enacted (W5 #8) | 30,00% | 0,00% | 67,35% | 0,00% | 67,35% |
| Other EU company (statutory rate modelled at 20 %) (W5 #17) | 20,00% | 0,00% | 77,35% | 0,00% | 77,35% |
| UK company (not a REIT) (W5 #15) | 0,00% | 0,00% | 97,35% | 5,00% | 92,35% |
| Irish UCITS fund distribution (W5 #16) | 0,00% | 0,00% | 97,35% | 5,00% | 92,35% |
| Cyprus company (W5 #12) | 0,00% | 0,00% | 97,35% | 5,00% | 92,35% |
GeSY is charged on investment income up to 180.000 € a year; above that the rate per 100 falls. Capital gains on shares and fund units are not taxed in Cyprus; crypto gains are taxed 8 %.
What the estimate assumes
- US rate 15 % assumes a W-8BEN form is on file with your broker (US–Cyprus treaty); without it the US withholds 30 %.
- US funds (ETFs, closed-end funds, BDCs) may designate part of a payout as exempt for non-US investors (IRC 871(k)); whether your broker applies it shows on your Form 1042-S.
- US REIT dividends are assumed to get the treaty rate of 15 %; check your Form 1042-S.
- Russian dividends: the Russian broker withholds 15 % for a non-resident today (resident rates until it learns your status).
- Other EU countries withhold 15–26.375 % by law; we model 20 %. Treaty relief is often only by reclaim.
- Irish UCITS funds pay out without Irish tax (non-resident declaration); US tax on the fund’s own US dividends is already inside the fund.
- Domiciled: the 5 % SDC is covered by the foreign tax already withheld (credit), so nothing more is due on this income.
- GeSY 2.65 % applies to dividends and interest of every Cyprus resident, domiciled or not, up to €180,000 of income a year.
- Return of capital in a fund’s payout is not income and is not taxed, but brokers may withhold on it first; we show its share where we know it.
- Not modelled: dividends from other countries (Switzerland, Canada, China, Hong Kong and others), UK REITs, depositary receipts, interest and coupons. The pages say so instead of guessing.
- Which country: the ISIN prefix where we know it (instrument pages), otherwise the issuer’s country in our data (screener and calendar). A US-listed Irish or Swiss company can therefore read as US in the screener; its dividend page uses the ISIN.
Broker availability rules
Indicative rules (version 2026-10-15) from the brokers’ published coverage; the screener’s broker filter shows only “available”.
- Available = the broker states it offers that market and type of instrument to clients like you. It does not promise this exact line is listed.
- Not confirmed = we could not check it (a market outside the published list, an unclear fund status, your country). The filter leaves these out.
- EU/EEA retail clients cannot buy funds without a Key Information Document (US ETFs, US closed-end funds); professional clients and clients of non-EU entities can.
- BDCs are shown as not confirmed for EU retail clients: brokers classify them differently. REITs trade as shares.
- Signed in, the screener starts with the brokers of your investor profile; nothing here recommends a broker.
